NFC tap to clock in

Many workplaces put an Atteny NFC tag by the door or the till. Holding your phone against it is the quickest way to clock in, and it shows that you are really there.

Where a location has a tag, the tap is required unless your admin switched that off. A clock-in from the location list is then refused, or held for a manager to approve.

   Hold your phone against the tag

   With the screen on, hold your phone against the tag for a second. Atteny opens the Time clock and shows NFC Tag Detected with your location.

   To start the scan yourself, open the Time clock (the round button in the middle of the bottom bar) and tap Scan NFC Tag.

   Confirm the clock-in

   Tap Confirm Clock In. Your time starts. If your location also checks where you are, allow location access when your phone asks: an ordinary tag does not replace that check. See GPS location checks.

   Tap again for a break or to clock out

   Tap the same tag while a shift runs and Atteny asks What would you like to do? Choose Start Break or Clock Out.

The tap at the end of a break and at clock-out#

Where the tap is required, End Break and End Shift open the tag scan too. Starting a break needs no tap.

If the tag will not read, you are not stuck. Cancel the scan and the app asks End break without the tag? or Clock out without the tag? and lets you go on. A manager then reviews that shift.

Secure tags#

Some workplaces use secure tags. Each tap is signed and can be used only once, so it cannot be copied. At such a location:

• only a tap on the secure tag clocks you in or out directly,
• a verified secure tap needs no location check.

If the tag will not read#

• You cancel the scan: if you started it with Scan NFC Tag, the app asks Couldn't scan the tag? and offers to clock you in for a manager to approve.
• The tag is not registered at this location: after one failed try the app offers to ask your manager for approval.
• Your phone cannot read the tag, or the tap is missing: the offer comes after two failed tries. A scan counts when you started it with Scan NFC Tag.
• A secure tag cannot be verified: the offer comes after three failed tries. Your manager may check that you are on site before approving.
• You work at several locations with a tag: the app cannot tell which one a failed scan was for. A tag it cannot read is not counted, and cancelling the scan only shows the location list. Tap your location there and confirm. That clock-in is held for your manager or refused, and on the second refusal (the third at a secure tag) the app offers approval.
• Android, NFC switched off: the Time clock shows NFC Is Turned Off. Tap Open NFC Settings and switch NFC on.
• Your phone has no NFC: you see NFC Not Available. Where the tap is not required, pick your location from the list. Where it is required, a clock-in from the list is held for a manager, at once or after the app has offered manager approval (two tries, three at a secure tag). On such a phone you cannot end a break or the shift at that location yourself: do not start a break, and ask a manager to clock you out from Who's in.

If you do not have the app yet#

The tag opens a web page in your browser instead of the app. That page does not clock you in. It offers a button to open Atteny and, below it, a link to get the app. Install Atteny, sign in, then tap the tag again.
