The NFC tag won't scan

Phone position, NFC switched off, the wrong tag for your location — and what to do when nothing works.

You're holding your phone against the tag and nothing happens — no buzz, no app, no check-in. Work through these in order; the first group fixes most taps.

Start with the phone

  • Screen on and unlocked. A dark or locked screen doesn't scan.
  • Find the antenna. On iPhone it's the very top edge of the back; on most Android phones it's the middle of the back. Slide the phone slowly across the tag until it catches.
  • Hold still for a second or two. Sweeping the phone past the tag is the commonest reason a tap doesn't register.
  • Thick or metal case? Take it off and try again.

Then the app

  • Android with NFC offCheck In shows NFC Is Turned Off. Tap Open NFC Settings, switch NFC on, and come back; the app rechecks itself.
  • No NFC chip in the phone — you'll see NFC Not Available. Tapping will never work on this handset; use the fallback below.
  • Start the scan yourself — open Check In, tap Scan NFC Tag, then hold the phone to the tag while it says "Hold your phone near the NFC tag at your location".

The tag reads, but Atteny rejects it

Most of these need an admin — you can't fix them from your phone.

What the alert saysWhat it means
"This NFC tag doesn't contain a valid record."Blank or wiped tag; an admin has to write it again.
"This NFC tag is not registered with Atteny."It's not an Atteny tag — a door fob or transport card, say.
"This NFC tag is linked to an unknown location."It points at a site you're not assigned to. Ask your manager.
"This NFC tag is linked to a different location than your current shift."You're on shift elsewhere — clock out where you clocked in.
"NFC tag verification failed. This tag does not match any registered tag for this location."An admin must register that tag against the location.

When nothing works

Open Check In and pick your site from the Locations list underneath — that's a normal manual check-in. If your admin has switched on Require NFC for clock-in, that route is blocked and you'll get Unable to Check In with "This location requires NFC check-in. Please tap the NFC tag to clock in." Then ask a manager to clock you in from Who's in on the web; they can set the correct start time.

How the tap is meant to work: NFC tap to clock in. The whole shift day: Clocking in and out.
